Sumi Gaeshi
Sumi Gaeshi - Corner Throw
Sumi Gaeshi is classified as Sutemi Waza (Sacrifice Technique) in Judo.
Sumi Gaeshi involves sacrificing your position, by lying down on to your back, and using your leg to guide your use over and on to their back.
Here's a basic breakdown of how Sumi Gaeshi is typically executed:
- Grip: On the sleeve and high on the lapel.
- Kuzushi (Off-balance): After breaking your opponent's balance to the front corner, drop down on to your back, directly beneath them.
- Entry: As you're falling back, place the instep of your foot (on the lapel side) on your your opponent's inner high.
- Execution: Maintain the tension through the grips and finish the throw by bringing your opponent right over your head.
Sumi Gaeshi requires precise timing, coordination, and proper use of leverage through commitment to scarfing your position, using this energy to initially break your opponents balance and then to complete the throw.
